Ingredients

  • Rolos: These chocolate-covered caramels melt just enough to become gooey and soft without turning into a mess. They’re the main event and give each pretzel its rich, chewy center.
  • Pretzel Snaps or Mini Twists: The salty crunch pairs perfectly with the sweet Rolo. Snaps give a square base, while mini twists add a more rustic look.
  • M&M’s: These colorful candies are ideal for decorating and add a subtle crunch. Use seasonal colors for Halloween, or swap in peanut M&M’s for something different.
  • Candy Eyes: These turn the treats into little Halloween monsters. They add personality and are always a hit with kids.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Use Any Rolo Flavor: Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even the limited-edition sea salt caramel ones will work.
  • Swap in Peanut Butter Cups: Mini peanut butter cups are a fun and delicious alternative to Rolos.
  • Pretzel Options: You can also use pretzel waffles, pretzel crisps, or pretzel flats, depending on the texture and look you prefer.
  • Change the Toppings: Try candy corn, chopped nuts, or even festive sprinkles for a creative twist.
  • Make It Nut-Free: If you’re avoiding nuts, stick with basic chocolate candies and check labels carefully.

Step by Step Instructions

Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 250°F. Line two baking trays with parchment paper. Working in batches prevents the Rolos from hardening too quickly before you can decorate them.

Assemble the Base

Place 18 pretzels (or however many you’re making) evenly spaced on the first tray. Top each one with an unwrapped Rolo.

Bake Briefly

Bake for 2 – 3 minutes – just until the Rolos look shiny and slightly soft. You want them warm enough to press toppings into, but not fully melted.

Decorate

Remove the tray from the oven and immediately press one M&M or candy eye into the center of each softened Rolo. Then repeat with the second tray.

Let Them Set

Allow the Rolo pretzels to cool and firm up. You can chill them in the fridge for 10 – 15 minutes or leave them at room temperature for 20 – 30 minutes.

Tips and Notes

  • Watch the Bake Time: Only 2 – 3 minutes is all you need. If you overbake, the chocolate can bubble or split.
  • Work in Batches: Decorating while the chocolate is still warm is key.
  • Use Parchment Paper: This keeps everything from sticking and makes clean-up easy.
  • Don’t Skip the Chill: Cooling helps the chocolate firm up so they stay intact when you pick them up.
  • Customize the Look: Make monster eyes, spooky color combos, or mix candy shapes for a Halloween party tray.
